Assignment 5: Working with Found Objects

The directions given for this project was to use found objects that opposed each other and find a relationship between them. I chose a screwdriver and a flower. I began this project thinking about the objects that I had already in my possession; I thought of the screw driver I had in my car and the abundance of flowers in nature. I was having trouble dissecting the two objects and figuring how their oppositions of each other could work in my favor until I was instructed to separate my feelings. I separated my feelings by directing them towards one object at a time. Writing down my feelings and preconceived notions of the objects individually opened a world of possibilities for the project. The screwdriver I saw as hard working or involved hard work; I also saw it as dirty or messy because of the work that it is used for. With the flower my initial thoughts were that it was pretty and not waiting for anyone’s approval to grow. Taking the individual thoughts and combining them created a connection between the two objects. The connection being that they go together despite how polar opposite that they are. The hard work that the screwdriver puts into a project has an outcome of something beautiful like a flower. The flower is able to bloom because of the hard work that gets put in. I feel like this project was a key to unlock a part of my brain that thinks more mindfully about seemingly mundane objects.
