Assignment 3 and 4: Molds and Mulitples
The first part of this project was to recreate a 3D object from life using clay which played into the second part of this project that required a mold to be made of the object in order to make multiples of it. I chose a crystal prism to recreate because of the complexity of the creation within a seemingly simple shape. It proved challenging to get every side and groove to look uniform. Despite my struggles with making the clay rendering perfect (which it wasn’t in the end), the mold that came out of it was exactly what I imagined. After two molds were made out of 100% silicone caulk, I played around with what to make the molds out of. In the first attempt I used air dry clay but, after it was dry, I realized I used too much clay and was having trouble carving it down into the shape I wanted. In the second attempt, I used liquid plaster that was poured into the mold. This was a much more successful attempt because after it was dry I could sand down the edges to make it a better representation of the crystal prism I was trying to recreate in the first place. The second half of the project also required displaying the multiples. I chose a slider container to display them because it played on the idea of emmerison that I had in my head when I decided on the crystals in the beginning. The idea I had in my head had tones of spirituality and routine. Displaying the crystals so they are all “reflecting” off of each other perfectly encasing those tones.
