Working with Foam

The prompt of this project was to create an abstract 3D object made of insulation foam covered in plaster. I drew inspiration from the artist Ben Pedersen’s piece Soft Time Travel. He created a mushroom-like shape of clay and wood. This inspired my organic mushroom looking shape in my sculpture. After seeing his piece, I took the inspiration and ran with it. In my sketches, you can see how the idea evolved into its own thing. It became a mushroom cap with a strong base that resembles the trunk of a tree that sits in a bowl. Hanging off of the mushroom cap are more pieces of plaster foam meant to resemble crystals. I used gouache paint to add color to it. I chose gouache because of the watery and light color tendencies that it has. The light colors go along with the ethereal, nature, fairy-esque theme I was going for when I thought up the piece. I am in love with the way this piece turned out, especially the crystals that hang from underneath the tree.I feel like the vision was executed perfectly from my sketch.

Group Project Sculpture 2

  Coming to an agreement on what to do as a group that we could all personalize on our own was the hardest part of this project. We decided to collectively build a house; we each got a room in the house that we could decorate with our own specialities like used parts, wood, foam, etc. The rooms we chose were attic, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and a bedroom. We chose a theme for the house by randomly picking out words from a hat. The words we landed on were busted, alien, whimsical, reptile people, shiny, gloom, doom, etc. I would say for a group project this was definitely one of the better ones that I have been assigned because we all were able to put our own spin on it. My room was really reminiscent of the collection of books I have read in the past year with the wings and the blood spatter. I wish I could have devoted more time into this piece with tiny details and the construction.

Project 1

      Project 1’s guidelines were vague and open ended, which was terrifying at first but then allowed for full creative liberties. I was instructed to make something that I want to explore more or something that I was passionate about. I chose wings as the foundation of my project. Wings, specifically angel wings, are so interesting to me because of the texture, differentiations and uniqueness. Not only did the visual aesthetics entice me into creating wings but also the emotional ramifications that I attach to them. I see wings as an extension to who a person is like an aura. Despite the fact that humans don’t actually have wings, but with historical images and stories, one can imagine a world with them. I chose to make the wings out of wood because of the sturdiness and resilience of wood. Project 2

  Project 2 was an interesting learning opportunity for me. My original intent for the piece was to create the illusion of hands (fully rounded and 3D) to pop out of the wood while grabbing figures. I think I was riding on a confidence high from the last project that I thought I could achieve it. Throughout the process of creating this I learned very quickly that I bit off more than I could chew. No matter how much I sanded down the wood it wouldn’t be enough to make a life-like and fleshy hand. By the time I had thrown in the towel, I had realized that the reason I was having trouble was because I was stuck in this liminal space between 2D and 3D. This space between dimensions is hard because this was one the first times I have truly worked in 3D. In order to salvage the monstrosity of a sculpture I tried to add stain onto the hands to add the implied depth but that quickly got out of control.
