Group Project Sculpture 2

Image
Coming to an agreement on what to do as a group that we could all personalize on our own was the hardest part of this project. We decided to collectively build a house; we each got a room in the house that we could decorate with our own specialities like used parts, wood, foam, etc. The rooms we chose were attic, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and a bedroom. We chose a theme for the house by randomly picking out words from a hat. The words we landed on were busted, alien, whimsical, reptile people, shiny, gloom, doom, etc. I would say for a group project this was definitely one of the better ones that I have been assigned because we all were able to put our own spin on it. My room was really reminiscent of the collection of books I have read in the past year with the wings and the blood spatter. I wish I could have devoted more time into this piece with tiny details and the construction.

Tension Sculpture

Image
A mental or emotional strain on the mind that is caused by stress that is how Tension is described. The idea for this project came to me in a dream. The idea was a chair or an object that had a cage surrounding a light bulb. I correlated this structural idea with tension regarding the the untapped potential that people cage inside themselves because of fear or motivation. With the chair being black and dark with rigid, harsh structure shows the tension between the person and the potential your sitting on and hiding. The meaning behind this sculpture is really relevant amongst my peers and age range. We are at this pivotal age where we have to decide if we want to tap into this passion/potential or set it aside.   I created this chair with a bunch of pieces of scrap wood and a light bulb with a cord attachment. I wish I could make this chair look more like a chair with a cushion but it was not realistic for me to do finically.

Labor and Body Sculpture

Image
Labor and Body, two very similar words in the way that one helps another but for this project they came out in different ways. Labor was present in this project because of how much work I personally devoted to this project. A labor of love is what I reminded myself every time I wanted to give up on this project. This project was created off of another project that I made last semester. It was a 4 foot by 2 foot wooden wing that had carved wings and feathers in it. Despite putting a lot of effort into that first wing, it had more 2D than 3D qualities which motivated me to create a 3D wing. I started this project by using the first wing as a reference by how many feathers I needed. I cut out each individual feather from different wood types, so they are each unique in their own way with their grain and size. I ended up with 187 individual feathers, ranging from small to lar...

Entropy Sculpture

Image
Entropy is the exploration of decay in the way that it is involved with the environment and our surroundings.  The way I used entropy and its relation to ecology is by making my own world. In books, certain books for certain people can lure you into a whole new world between the pages. I have never been a reader until quite recently when a book swept me up and I found myself between the pages. After coming out of the fantasy world, I found myself longing for it. I decided to create my project as a reminder for what mysteries, fantasies and characters lie in between the pages. I made an insert to go in between books on a shelf to represent the possibilities of what could happen when you read. It is human nature to be attracted to the edge; the edge of life and death, the edge of this world and the next. This project is kind of the liminal space in between this world and the one within the pages. The bookshelf insert is made of wood, glass, moss, fake flowers and A LOT of ho...

Project 2

Image
Project 2 was an interesting learning opportunity for me. My original intent for the piece was to create the illusion of hands (fully rounded and 3D) to pop out of the wood while grabbing figures. I think I was riding on a confidence high from the last project that I thought I could achieve it. Throughout the process of creating this I learned very quickly that I bit off more than I could chew. No matter how much I sanded down the wood it wouldn’t be enough to make a life-like and fleshy hand. By the time I had thrown in the towel, I had realized that the reason I was having trouble was because I was stuck in this liminal space between 2D and 3D. This space between dimensions is hard because this was one the first times I have truly worked in 3D. In order to salvage the monstrosity of a sculpture I tried to add stain onto the hands to add the implied depth but that quickly got out of control. The stain quickly took over the hands and still looked flat. Out of ideas I decided to p...

Project 1

Image
Project 1’s guidelines were vague and open ended, which was terrifying at first but then allowed for full creative liberties. I was instructed to make something that I want to explore more or something that I was passionate about. I chose wings as the foundation of my project. Wings, specifically angel wings, are so interesting to me because of the texture, differentiations and uniqueness. Not only did the visual aesthetics entice me into creating wings but also the emotional ramifications that I attach to them. I see wings as an extension to who a person is like an aura. Despite the fact that humans don’t actually have wings, but with historical images and stories, one can imagine a world with them. I chose to make the wings out of wood because of the sturdiness and resilience of wood. Trees weather many storms and stand tall to provide so many things for others like shade, protection, warmth, etc. Using wood in my piece, elementally plays into the resilience ...

Assignment 5: Working with Found Objects

Image
The directions given for this project was to use found objects that opposed each other and find a relationship between them. I chose a screwdriver and a flower. I began this project thinking about the objects that I had already in my possession; I thought of the screw driver I had in my car and the abundance of flowers in nature. I was having trouble dissecting the two objects and figuring how their oppositions of each other could work in my favor until I was instructed to separate my feelings. I separated my feelings by directing them towards one object at a time. Writing down my feelings and preconceived notions of the objects individually opened a world of possibilities for the project. The screwdriver I saw as hard working or involved hard work; I also saw it as dirty or messy because of the work that it is used for. With the flower my initial thoughts were that it was pretty and not waiting for anyone’s approval to grow. Taking the individual thoughts and combining them crea...
